Dr. El-Hawary received his Bachelor’s from University of Alexandria, and the Ph. D. degree from the University of Alberta, all in Electrical Engineering. He served on faculty at Memorial University of Newfoundland, COPPE at the Federal University of Rio de Janiero and the University of Alexandria.

His work in computational solutions for economic operation of power systems including hydro-thermal systems, and applying computational intelligence techniques to power system operational problems is frequently referred to by users, and is documented in ten textbooks and research monographs and more than 300 research articles.

He is Founding Editor, Power Letters, Power and Energy Society, is Associate Editor for two Power Systems' Journals. He is Editor of the IEEE Press Power Engineering Series, and Electrical Power Engineering, McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.

He consults frequently for utilities and governmental organizations and taught over 100 professional development offerings in numerous parts of the world. He is a distinguished lecturer for the Power and Energy and Industry Applications Societies, and IEEE Canada. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineers Canada, and the Engineering Institute of Canada.
